HVAC contractors have to adhere to certain licensing, insurance/bonding, and continuing education guidelines, depending on the state in which they operate. But there are general requirements, like contractors having to pass a written test and meet a minimum work experience requirement of 2-7 years. Because of rapidly evolving technologies, states may also require contractors to complete ongoing education courses to maintain their license.
Your Needs
Before deciding to hire an HVAC company, consider your equipment’s model and its maintenance background. As well, check which rooms in your home feel too cold or too warm. This helps you decide whether a contractor you’re considering has enough knowledge about your system and will be able to provide the needed solutions.

A licensed HVAC contractor should have a state Construction Contractors Board number or something like it, and this should be indicated in their website. If you don’t see it there, call them and ask. Once you have the number, use it to verify with the state board if their license is current. You should also ask the company to provide proof of their liability coverage. Client References
Before you actually hire an HVAC company, ask them to provide three client references at least. Then call these people and ask them how satisfied they were with the contractor’s performance.
Also inquire if they would hire the same people in the future.
Written Estimates
If you’re going to have a new HVAC system installed, they may take measurements of your home, check insulation, ductwork and your windows. Make sure the bid is itemized, includes details such as warranties, and presented in writing.
